The Usman Nenani-led faction of the Labour Party (LP) has disassociated itself from any coalition arrangements ahead of the 2027 general elections. This was disclosed by the faction’s Interim National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, during an appearance on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’ on Friday.
According to Nwokocha, the party maintains its own internal structures and has not joined any alliance. He specifically distanced the Labour Party from the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition, which reportedly includes key opposition figures like Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, and Nasir El-Rufai.
“Well, I’m not aware of that coalition. As far as I know, Labour Party hasn’t been informed of any such alliance. Our internal coalition is already strong,” Nwokocha said.
Addressing Peter Obi’s involvement in the coalition talks, Nwokocha clarified that while Obi remains respected as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, his personal political engagements do not represent the position of the party.
He also declared that Julius Abure’s tenure as LP National Chairman had officially ended, citing what he described as a “political accident” that led to the current interim leadership.
Reacting to INEC’s continued recognition of Abure on its official portal, Nwokocha stated, “Placing your picture somewhere doesn’t make you the owner of the place.”
Regarding the role of Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, in the party’s affairs, Nwokocha affirmed that Otti remains a constitutionally recognised member of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC). He added that INEC had been formally notified of the recent NEC meeting.
On resolving the internal party crisis, Nwokocha insisted that the matter had been settled by the courts.
