The Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC) has issued a final warning to 3,598 federal civil servants who failed to participate in the 2021 verification exercise, giving them just ten days to prove the legitimacy of their employment or face immediate dismissal.
According to a report by The Punch on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, the affected officers must appear for re-verification between Monday, August 18, and Thursday, August 28, 2025. The exercise will be conducted across key ministries and agencies, with the Ministries of Education, Information, and Labour recording the highest number of defaulting staff.
In a statement, the FCSC warned that failure to appear will be taken as evidence that the individual is holding a fake appointment letter. It stressed that there will be no further extensions beyond the stated deadline.
Officers are required to present both original and photocopies of vital documents, including:
Letter of appointment
Letter of promotion
Gazette of appointment
Staff change letter

The Commission explained that the re-verification is part of a broader government drive to combat corruption, eliminate ghost workers, and clean up the federal payroll. Officials said the exercise aims to address the long-standing problem of fraudulent appointments that have plagued the civil service for years.
“The message is clear — anyone who fails to show up is deliberately avoiding detection and will be removed from the service,” the FCSC stated.
This move underscores the government’s renewed determination to ensure that only genuine, duly recruited workers remain in the civil service.
