In recent times, Enugu State has witnessed an unprecedented wave of discontent and frustration among its citizens, as the administration of Governor Peter Mbah continues to impose a draconian tax regime. The latest protest by the good people of Awkunanaw in Enugu East senatorial zone is a stark reminder of Mbah’s disconnect from the realities faced by the everyday citizens of his state.

This recent outcry follows a pattern of disillusionment that has swept across various communities under Mbah’s tenure. The people of Idodo, within Mbah’s own Nkanu East Local Government Area, recently took to the streets to voice their frustrations. This clear signal of dissatisfaction from his home zone should at least , be a wake-up call to the governor.

Since assuming office, Mbah has systematically ignored the campaign promises that once filled his supporters with hope. Instead of alleviating the economic burdens, he has chosen to exacerbate them by enforcing high taxes, showing a blatant disregard for the severe hardship plaguing the nation. His actions are a far cry from the empathy and understanding he once vowed to bring to the office.

The grievances are not isolated to Awkunanaw and Idodo. The people of Uzo Uwani and Nsukka have also expressed their dissatisfaction through protests, highlighting a widespread discontent that spans the entire state. These demonstrations are not merely about taxes; they reflect a deep-seated frustration with a leader who appears to be out of touch with the needs and struggles of his people.

Peter Mbah’s administration has become synonymous with broken promises and failed leadership. His focus on increasing taxation, rather than fostering economic growth and development, reveals a leader more concerned with revenue generation than the welfare of his citizens. The continuous protests are a testament to the growing realization among the people that Mbah is not the leader he portrayed himself to be during his campaign.

As the discontent grows, it becomes increasingly clear that Governor Mbah’s policies are not just failing; they are actively harming the people of Enugu. The citizens deserve a leader who listens, understands, and acts in their best interests, not one who burdens them further in times of hardship.

The widespread protests across Enugu State are a direct consequence of Governor Peter Mbah’s inability to connect with, and address the needs of his people. His tenure is marked by a failure to deliver on promises and a focus on policies that increase the suffering of the populace.

The people of Enugu deserve better, and it is high time for a leadership that prioritizes their well-being over punitive taxation.
