The first lady, Mrs Nkechi Mbah,marks the international women’s day today in Enugu.
The first lady who was represented by the wife of the Enugu state speaker Mrs, Chinyere Ugwu celebrated the women of the state assuring them of Government’s support.
This year’s theme which is “lnvest in woman, accelerate progress” was attended by dignitaries from all over the state.
In her address, the first lady said this day is set aside to celebrate women.
“Today, we gather to celebrate the strength, resilience, and determination of women everywhere. We honor the women who have paved the way for us, who have broken down barriers, and who have inspired us to be our best selves.
We celebrate the women of Enugu, who are the backbone of our communities, our families, and our economy.
We recognize the critical role they play in shaping our society, from the marketplace to the boardroom, from the classroom to the parliament.
As we celebrate, we also acknowledge the challenges that women still face. We recognize the systemic inequalities, the biases, and the barriers that prevent women from reaching their full potential. We acknowledge the violence, the harassment, and the discrimination that women suffer, simply because of their gender.
But we also know that women are not just victims; they are agents of change. They are the leaders, the innovators, and the problem-solvers who are driving progress and development in our communities.
So today, we recommit ourselves to empowering women, to amplifying their voices, and to creating a world where they can thrive. We pledge to work together to break down the barriers, to challenge the biases, and to create opportunities for women to succeed.
Let us celebrate the women of Enugu, and let us celebrate the women of the world. Let us honor their strength, their resilience, and their determination. And let us work together to create a brighter future for all.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Gender, Mrs Ngozi Enih, applauded women in every spheres of life.
She said achieving gender equality is not just a woman issue.
She said when the society invest in women, we strengthen opportunities.
Empowering women boost economic diversification.
Closing the gender gap she said would add trillions of dollars to the global GDP.
Investing in women is not just the right thing to do it is the smart thing to do.
Also, a director at the ministry of gender Mrs Chizoba Nweke, urged woman to always stand up to thier rights and also speak up when they arr victimised.
The event which had alot of side attractions also had presentation of awards to outstanding women in the state.
