The Corporate Online Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Enugu State Council, has called for a strategic partnership with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to strengthen public sensitization efforts against corruption and cybercrime.
The proposal was made during a courtesy visit to the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Enugu Zonal Directorate, ACE I Aisha Abubakar.
Speaking on behalf of the Chapel, Chairman Clinton Umeh emphasized the need for a robust collaboration to raise awareness, particularly among youths, about the consequences of cybercrime and other financial offenses.
“As journalists, we are troubled by the rising cases of economic and cyber-related crimes. Many young people are unaware of the serious implications of their actions. We believe that with proper orientation and consistent sensitization, especially through social media platforms where we are active, we can help steer many away from crime,” Umeh stated.
He expressed the Chapel’s willingness to support the EFCC’s public education efforts by amplifying its campaigns and sharing relevant information with the public.
Umeh also called on the Commission to engage the media in its programming to ensure wider reach and impact.
Responding, the Acting Zonal Director, Aisha Abubakar, welcomed the initiative and praised the media’s essential role in promoting transparency and accountability.
“We are always open to collaboration. From inception, the EFCC has maintained public enlightenment as a core function, and we recognize journalists as critical stakeholders in this mission,” she said.
Abubakar encouraged the NUJ and the public to utilize the EFCC’s anonymous reporting platform—the Eagle Eye app—which allows individuals to report economic and financial crimes discreetly.
“All you need to do is download the app and report any suspicious activity without disclosing your identity. It’s secure and effective,” she explained.
She assured the journalists of the Commission’s readiness to support future initiatives and participate in joint sensitization programmes. “We look forward to working with you. Whenever you have a programme, invite us; and when we have ours, you’ll be our partners,” Abubakar added.
The meeting marks a significant step in fostering cooperation between the media and Nigeria’s anti-graft agency in the ongoing fight against corruption and cybercrime in Enugu and beyond.
