Enugu — The Federal Government has commenced a comprehensive overhaul of all security training institutions across the country, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive to modernize facilities and improve the quality of training for security operatives.
This was made known by the Chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC) Committee on Security Training Reform, and Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, during a monitoring visit to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Training College in Oji River, Enugu State, on Sunday.
Mbah explained that the move stemmed from the President’s declaration of a state of emergency over the poor state of training infrastructure for law enforcement agencies, describing the situation as “a national challenge that demands urgent intervention.”
> “What we have seen here and in other parts of the country is far below the standard required to prepare our men and women for 21st-century policing and community protection,” he said.
According to him, the committee has embarked on a nationwide assessment to identify the most critical areas requiring rehabilitation and re-equipment, adding that the exercise would form the basis of a detailed report to be presented at the next NEC meeting.
He disclosed that the team had been given a 30-day deadline to complete its evaluation, working alongside technical consultants and the leadership of security institutions to determine priority interventions.
Mbah reaffirmed the Federal Government’s resolve to ensure that training schools for the Police, NSCDC, and other paramilitary agencies are rebuilt, adequately equipped, and aligned with global best practices.
> “This initiative goes beyond infrastructure; it’s about redefining the standard of security education and building a disciplined, well-trained force that can respond to emerging threats effectively,” he added.
The governor also applauded President Tinubu’s approval of the recruitment of 30,000 new police officers, noting that the success of such reforms depends on providing world-class facilities where officers can receive modern and practical training.
He assured that upon completion of the committee’s work, a comprehensive reform framework would be submitted to guide the government’s investment in security training and capacity development.
> “Our goal is simple — to give our security men and women the environment, equipment, and knowledge they need to serve Nigeria with excellence,” Mbah concluded.
