The Borno State Government formally bid farewell to 54 indigenes on Friday, 27 February 2026, who were awarded scholarships to study aeronautics and aviation-related courses at the Isaac Balami University of Aeronautics, Nigeria.
The scholarship, announced last week by the Executive Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, is part of the administration’s ongoing commitment to human capital development across the state.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Engr Lawan Abba Wakilbe, congratulated the beneficiaries for emerging successful from a highly competitive selection process, in which over 1,200 applicants competed for 54 slots, with two candidates selected from each local government area.
He disclosed that the state is investing about $30,000 per student annually, covering tuition, accommodation, feeding, transportation, training, and a ₦50,000 monthly stipend, stressing that parents are not required to pay any fees. The Commissioner urged the scholars to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to excellence, noting that public resources are being invested in their future.
Highlighting the strategic choice of Isaac Balami University, the Commissioner noted that it is Nigeria’s first private university of aeronautics, owned by a proud indigene of Borno State. He explained that investing in a world-class local institution strengthens indigenous capacity and keeps resources within the country.
He further cited the government’s other scholarship initiatives, including sponsorships for postgraduate studies in China, India, and Malaysia, as well as support for over 140 indigenes studying in India, who have excelled academically and are set to return as skilled manpower for the state’s universities, teaching hospitals, and research institutions.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mohammed Umar from Dikwa Local Government Area expressed profound gratitude to Governor Zulum for this bold investment in the future of Borno State. He further commended the Honourable Commissioner and the entire management team of the Borno State Scholarship Board for their dedication, transparency, and guidance throughout the selection and award process.
Umar pledged that the beneficiaries would uphold discipline, integrity, and excellence during their training, returning to serve the state as competent professionals and future leaders.
The programme further underscores the Zulum administration’s commitment to education, youth empowerment, and sustainable development in Borno State.
The farewell ceremony was attended by the Special Advisers on Higher Education and Education, the Senior Technical Assistant on Technical and Vocational Education, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the Executive Secretary of the Borno State Scholarship Board, Directors from the Ministries of Education and Justice, and other distinguished stakeholders.
