The Federal Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, on Monday commissioned Enugu Air, a new state-owned commercial airline established by the administration of Governor Peter Mbah. The airline is kicking off operations with three Embraer aircraft and a promise of regional and international expansion.
At the launch event held in Enugu, Keyamo praised Governor Mbah as a “relentless and incredible” leader, stating that his track record of achievements within two years in office would make him a formidable opponent in future elections.
> “Governor Mbah was the first to visit me after I was sworn in,” Keyamo recalled. “He didn’t allow me to settle down before pushing his aviation agenda. He brought his private sector urgency to governance. Frankly, we’re worried about how to defeat him in 2027.”
He commended the state’s partnership with XEJet, describing the company as a 100% Nigerian-owned aviation firm with international credentials, including operating the national carrier of Sierra Leone.
Addressing the lingering concerns about the proposed concession of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Keyamo clarified that the initiative aligns with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to attract private sector investment into the aviation sector.
> “Governor Mbah is not waiting for bureaucracy. He said he wanted private sector investment for Enugu Airport. The pace of his development is rapid. As I speak, regional flight approvals for Enugu are on the way,” the minister added.
Despite party differences, Keyamo openly acknowledged Mbah’s performance.
> “You’re in PDP, I’m not, but performance transcends party lines. Mr. President recognizes your achievements too. You are among the best-performing governors in the country.”
Governor Mbah, in his address, described the inauguration of Enugu Air as a bold step towards positioning the state as an aviation hub in West Africa. He emphasized that the airline will connect Enugu to major Nigerian cities and eventually expand internationally.
> “We begin with a golden triangle: Enugu–Abuja–Lagos. Soon, we’ll reach Port Harcourt, Owerri, Kano, and other key cities. In our next phase, Enugu Air will fly to Africa, China, Europe, the UK, and the US,” Mbah announced.
According to the governor, the airline is not just about transportation—it’s a vehicle for economic growth. He noted that Enugu Air would generate jobs, attract investment, and simplify travel for residents, the diaspora, and business communities.
Governor Mbah also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Minister Keyamo, aviation agencies, Fidelity Bank, and other partners for their support in making the project a reality.
Enugu State Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Obi Ozor, assured that the airline will uphold high operational standards and efficiency.
Also speaking at the event, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank, and Engr. Ayuba Emmanuel, CEO of XEJet, praised Governor Mbah’s leadership and reiterated their commitment to supporting the state’s aviation ambitions.
The well-attended inauguration attracted dignitaries including the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu, traditional leaders, business stakeholders, and enthusiastic residents.
