In Enugu State today, few political figures command as much grassroots attention as Chief Uchenna Geoffrey Nnaji (Nwakaibie). His growing acceptance among the people of Enugu State (Ndi Enugu) has not only energized supporters but has also clearly unsettled the political establishment. This rising influence explains the intense pressure and controversies that now trail his governorship ambition which is his only sin.
Chief Nnaji’s popularity did not come from political slogans or last minute promises. It is built over the years of visible service, empowerment, and commitment to improving the lives of ordinary people across Enugu State.
Unlike many politicians who appear only during election seasons, Chief Nnaji has been consistently present to serve his people.
Across several communities, his contributions are well known and widely acknowledged. He has created employment opportunities, enabling many youths to earn a living and support their families. Through empowerment programmes, he has supported women and young people to become self-reliant and economically productive.
In addition, Nwakaibie has provided clean water to many communities, addressing one of the most basic and pressing needs of the people. He has also supported road construction and rehabilitation, improving access roads for the people and farmers in communities to transport their farm produce to markets which thrives local commerce.
Also, several healthcare centres have benefited from his intervention, making medical services more accessible to rural dwellers. These interventions are not campaign claims; they are projects with real beneficiaries.
Beyond his grassroots impact, Chief Nnaji brings valuable national experience to service. He was the former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This position underscores his capacity to operate at the highest levels of governance and policy-making. It also shows that he possesses both the technical knowledge and administrative experience required to lead a modern state like Enugu where government promises seems to be empty.
As his popularity grows, so have attempts to distract and discredit him. In Nigerian politics, this is not an unusual strategy to discourage a credible candidate which gives the government political concern.
When a candidate becomes a serious threat to entrenched interests, attention often shifts from ideas and performance to allegations and controversy. The people of Enugu State (Ndi Enugu) see this development not as coincidence, but as a reaction rooted in fear and leadership failure.
The fear is understandable because the current administration came to office with strong promises, including provision of potable water to all communities. Years later, many communities still struggle to access clean water and basic services. Against this background, Chief Nnaji’s record of providing water and other social infrastructure without holding state power naturally invites comparison. And comparisons, especially unfavourable ones, make those in power uncomfortable.
Chief Nnaji represents a different model of leadership and service before position, action before excuses. He understands grassroots challenges because he has engaged directly with the people and invested in their wellbeing. His approach to leadership is not built on rhetoric, but on empathy, accountability, and results.
For Ndi Enugu, this moment calls for reflection. Elections should not be reduced to noise, distractions, or fear-driven narratives. They should be about character, capacity, and proven performance. The questions are simple: Who has consistently served the people? Who has created jobs and empowered communities? Who has demonstrated leadership at both grassroots and national levels?
For many Ndi Enugu, the answers point clearly to Chief Uchenna Geoffrey Nnaji (Nwakaibie).
History has shown that when a candidate earns genuine support through service, resistance often follows from those who fear change. But history also shows that truth endures, and the will of the people ultimately prevails.
Enugu State deserves leadership that understands its challenges and has the experience to address them. It deserves leadership that delivers real results, not just promises. Above all, it deserves leadership that places the people first and not the one that seems to be suffocating them and their business through unfavourable tax policies.
That is why the government is afraid and that is why Ndi Enugu must decide wisely.
